Introduction
Our silver-bearing phosphor bronze brazing wire is engineered for high-strength, flux-free joining of copper and copper alloys. Commonly referred to as BCuP alloys, these wires contain a precise addition of silver to enhance fluidity, reduce melting temperature, and improve overall joint ductility compared to standard phosphor bronze.
Designed for HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and electrical applications, this brazing wire is the industry standard for joining copper-to-copper components. The presence of phosphorus acts as a self-fluxing agent when brazing copper, eliminating the need for external flux and reducing post-weld cleaning time.
Key Features & Benefits
Flux-Free Brazing on Copper: The phosphorus content creates an automatic cleaning action on copper surfaces, making it ideal for air conditioning and refrigeration systems where flux residue could contaminate the system.
Enhanced Flow Characteristics: The addition of silver significantly improves wetting and capillary action, allowing the filler metal to flow smoothly into tight joint clearances.
High Electrical & Thermal Conductivity: Maintains excellent conductivity, making it suitable for electrical busbars and heat exchanger assemblies.
Versatile Application: Available in wire spools for automated flame brazing or straight lengths for manual torch work.
Typical Applications
HVAC & Refrigeration: Joining copper tubing, compressor fittings, and evaporator coils.
Plumbing: Copper pipe joints and domestic water systems.
Electrical: Motor windings, transformer connections, and switchgear components.
Automotive: Fuel lines and cooling system repairs involving brass or copper parts.
Recommended Grades (BCuP Series)
We supply a full range of phosphor bronze brazing wires corresponding to AWS A5.8 standards:
BCuP-2 (2% Silver): An economical choice for general copper brazing with good flow.
BCuP-3 (5% Silver): Offers a balance between cost and improved fluidity for tighter fits.
BCuP-5 (15% Silver): The most popular grade, providing excellent flow, lower melting point, and strong joints for critical HVAC/R applications.
BCuP-6 (6% Silver): Similar to BCuP-5 but with slightly different melting characteristics for specific torch techniques.
Technical Note
While excellent for copper, please note that flux must be used when brazing brass, bronze, steel, or other ferrous metals with this wire, as the phosphorus self-fluxing action only works on pure copper.
